Harlem Hellfighters

The Legacy Museum at Tuskegee University has lent 1 of the remaining 20 dioramas from an exhibit featuring a collection of 33 dioramas created for the 1940 Negro Exposition in Chicago for treatment  in Winterthur's Art Conservation Department.

My Part

Proper Left Background

The masonite background split from the plaster of the foreground, which had to be filled and then inpainted in various places around the background of the diorama. Using PVA paints was perfect because of its reversibility and it created just the right amount of semi-gloss finish.

On the background scenery there was a discolored reddish brown that did not make sense with the surrounding composition. After consulting with my supervisor, it was decided that it was probably a varnish that discolored with time. We agreed that I would inpaint only the parts that absolutely did not make sense.

Figure Throwing Grenade

I worked on inpainting portions of the figure who is throwing the grenade. I focused on inpainting the losses in his feet, front portion of his legs, and I had just started on his bag of grenades. However, at the end of my internship, I ran out of time, and left plenty of opportunities for future interns to practice inpainting.
